Dorsoduro
The largest of all the neighbourhoods, known as the art district of the city. Still today you will find a concentration of local artisans and small boutiques throughout the neighbourhood. The main attractions are the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, the Accademia, Ca'Rezzonico, the Squero where gondolas are made and the lovely Zattere that lines the Giudecca canal with all its delicious restaurants. Live like a local and head to campo Santa Margherita any time of day for an aperitivo in one of its colourful cafes.
San Marco
The most prestigious of all the neighbourhoods, it's the commercial, religious, and political heart of the city and has been for more than a millennium. The highlights of the neighbourhood are many, Piazza San Marco, the Basilica of San Marco, the Doge's Palace, the Fenice opera house, Palazzo Fortuny. For a local flare head to the beautiful square of Campo Santo Stefano for its elegant restaurants and lined streets with eclectic Venetian boutiques.
